IRTA - Agri-Food Technology Research Institute

IRTA is a research institute of the regional Government of Catalonia - Spain, adscribed to the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Action. IRTA's purpose is to contribute to the modernization, competitiveness and sustainable development of agriculture, animal & plant production, food technology, aquaculture and fisheries, agro-food economy and environment & global change, with the aim of consolidating a sustainable bio-based economy. Other areas of activity are related to the supply of healthy, high-quality foodstuffs to end consumers, as well as safe processing of foodstuffs. The institution is organized in 5 programs, which in total contain 20R&D departments in 9 centres, active in the above mentioned sectors. During the year of 2011, IRTA had €46.04M as total financial resources annd participated in 183 research projects, being 25 EU projects. 

Program GIRO, acronym of Integral Management of Organic Waste, has a wide experience in technological development and transfer, specialized education and consulting activities in the field of management and treatment of organic waste and by-products, produced by the different activity sectors (agricultural, farming, industrial and urban). Current main research areas are related to biological and physic-chemical processes applied to energy recovery and nutrients management, and the development of methodological tools for waste characterization, processes evaluation and decision making about appropriate technological solutions.
